Phuket Airport to Bang Rong Pier - Ground Transport Options

The thirty-minute drive from Phuket International Airport to Bang Rong Pier is the first leg of most journeys to Ko Yao Noi. It is a straightforward ride along Phuket's quieter east coast, but choosing the right transport option can set the tone for your entire trip. Here is what you need to know about getting from the arrivals hall to the ferry.

Metered Taxis

Official metered taxis are available from the taxi counter just outside the arrivals area. Tell the staff you are heading to Bang Rong Pier (sometimes written as "Banglong Pier" on local signs) and they will assign you a vehicle. The meter should be running from the start - if the driver suggests a flat fare instead, it is usually inflated. The metered fare for this distance is quite reasonable, plus a small airport surcharge.

Metered taxis are air-conditioned sedans or minivans, comfortable enough for the short ride. Drivers know Bang Rong Pier well, as it is a regular destination. Most do not speak much English, but the pier name is enough. If in doubt, show the Thai script on your phone.

Grab (Ride-Hailing App)

Grab is widely used in Phuket and often offers better pricing than airport taxis, particularly during off-peak hours. The app lets you see the fare upfront, pay by card or cash, and track your route in real time - all helpful if you are unfamiliar with the area. To use Grab at Phuket Airport, walk to the designated ride-hailing pickup zone (follow signs from arrivals), request your ride in the app, and wait for the driver to arrive.

One caveat: during busy arrival periods - particularly when multiple international flights land close together - the wait for a Grab driver can be longer than simply jumping in a metered taxi. If your ferry departure is tight, the taxi queue may be the faster option even if it costs a bit more.

Pre-Booked Hotel Transfers

Many Ko Yao Noi hotels and resorts offer airport-to-pier transfers, sometimes bundled with the ferry ticket as a complete package. This is the most effortless option: a driver meets you in arrivals holding a name sign, takes your bags, and delivers you to the pier with time to spare. The convenience premium varies by hotel, but the peace of mind - especially after a long flight - is worth it for many travellers.

If your hotel does not offer transfers, several local tour companies sell the same service. A quick search online before your trip will turn up multiple options. Book at least a day in advance and provide your flight details so the driver can adjust for any delays.

Rental Cars and Self-Drive

Renting a car at Phuket Airport and driving yourself to Bang Rong Pier is possible but rarely worth it for a Ko Yao trip. You would need to park the car at or near the pier for the duration of your island stay, and secure parking options are limited. If you do go this route, ask locally about safe overnight parking - some small businesses near the pier offer guarded parking for a daily fee.

Timing Your Connection

When planning your airport-to-ferry connection, build in at least ninety minutes between landing and your target ferry departure. This accounts for immigration (if arriving internationally), baggage claim, the thirty-minute drive, and a small buffer for pier ticket purchase. If your flight arrives late afternoon, check the last ferry time before booking - missing the final departure means an unplanned night in Phuket.

⚠️ Late Arrivals

If your flight lands after the last ferry has departed (around 17:00), you will need to overnight near Bang Rong or elsewhere in Phuket. A handful of small guesthouses are located near the pier, or head to Phuket Town for more options and catch the first ferry the next morning.
